In today's article we are going to discover one of the best kept secrets of the smallest of the Pitiusas islands. We are talking about the caves of Formentera, small corners of a different beauty to which we are used to in contrast to the unique turquoise waters.
If you decide to rent a boat with us, besides knowing the most popular and accessible on foot, you can also know the caves of Formentera that are only accessible by sea. We assure you that they are worth it, and very much!
Let's get started!
The caves of Punta Rasa in Formentera (or Cova de Punta Rasa as it is known by the locals.) are, without doubt, one of the must-see during your vacations in Ibiza and Formentera. They can only be accessed by sea and are very close to Cala Saona.
To visit it for the first time, we recommend you to hire our boat trip around Formentera (Poniente), as the basic route includes a stop in this idyllic area. We will provide the snorkeling equipment...
...and you the desire to enjoy!

While we are on the subject of diving, if you are a diving enthusiast you will be happy to know that in the same area as the Punta Rasa caves is the Cova de Sant Guillén (or Cueva de San Guillermo). Suitable for both beginners and experienced divers, the dive reaches a depth of 12 meters.
The contrasts of light coming from the surface, the rich and lively marine fauna and the impressive rocky galleries that form this cave of Formentera make it ideal for an unforgettable underwater experience.
A true wonder of the Mediterranean...
In the southwest of the island we find the most popular (and probably the most visited) cave of Formentera. It is Sa Cova Foradada ("the perforated cave" in Spanish), which refers to the hole through which the cave is accessed.
As it is very close to the famous Faro del Cap de Barbaria, which we are sure you want to visit, you can not miss the opportunity to visit this cave: the exit to the sea, on top of a cliff, will give you a view you will not forget.
A warning for instagrammers: selfies here are very, very much in demand...

If we go to the complete opposite side of the island (i.e., in the direction of La Mola Lighthouse) we can reach the "Cova d'Estrips" or the "Cueva de la Excavadora" (Excavator's Cave). This second meaning has been installed in the collective imagination because yes, there is still an excavator inside.
Present there since the 80s, the degradation of the vehicle has given the place an almost mystical character, being the meeting point for many "ravers" of the time. Beyond this little anecdote, you can not ignore the natural balcony overlooking the Mediterranean that you can enjoy in this cave of Formentera.
Although, beware, if you suffer from vertigo, keep in mind that the cliff where it is located reaches 200 meters high.
In addition to the two caves accessible by sea and the two caves accessible on foot that we have presented in this article, Formentera completes its speleological inventory with others of smaller size but with curious stories behind.
For example, the horror movie "La Cueva" (2014) was filmed in the Cueva de Sant Valero, a place where legend has it that a bandit named Vicent Pepa hid with all his loot. In the Cova des Fum ("Smoke Cave"), it is also said that the Viking King Sigurd hid his treasures.
Another cave of interest is the Cova Mala ("Bad Cave"), a place that, if you listen to the local sages, you will not enter twice at the risk of losing your life. Or the Cova de sa Mà Peluda ("Cave of the Hairy Hand"), where it has been heard that a large hairy hand has been seen! Do you dare to check if it is true?
Contact us and we will give you all the details so you do not miss any of the caves of Formentera.
